Help! What is Sex Therapy?

Understanding Sex Therapy

Sex therapy is a specialized form of counseling that addresses both individual and relational challenges related to sexuality. Whether you're facing issues such as erectile dysfunction, difficulty achieving orgasm, or conflicts over sexual desires, a sex therapist provides a supportive environment to explore and treat these concerns. We also help individuals who have experienced past sexual trauma to heal and reclaim their sexual well-being.

How does it work?

Sex therapy involves personalized talk therapy sessions where therapists facilitate open communication about sexual desires and challenges. Additionally, we often develop intimacy-building exercises for clients to practice outside of sessions. Qualified sex therapists are licensed mental health professionals with advanced training in human sexuality, relationship dynamics, and therapeutic techniques tailored to sexual health issues.

What special training do you have?

I received my Master of Arts degree in Marriage and Family Therapy with a specialization in Systemic Sex Therapy. I have also received extensive training at NWIOI in Advanced Clinical Sexology and am a Certified Integrated Intimacy Professional Associate (CIIPA). I specialize in bringing a holistic lens when I help couples and individuals work through sex and intimacy issues.

I approach therapy from many different theories. I am trained in IFS from the IFS Institute's Level 1 training. I also integrate Attachment theory, Experiential therapy, and Emotionally Focused Therapy.

I'm a parent, how can sex therapy help me?

If you are a parent who wishes they could talk with their kids about their sexuality, gender identity, and the diversity they experience around them, you will find that support here. So often, when we encounter our children's sexuality, their questions, or their exuberance in embracing their sexual selves, shame finds its way into the conversation. You and your children deserve to flourish in this space, and with the right tools and guidance, you can! Discussing sex, gender, or personal sexual ethics can be a bonding experience, full of delight, joy, and a secure connection.

What resources do you recommend?

It is my greatest joy that the conversation around human sexuality is evolving and expanding! We all deserve to embrace every part of our human experience, free from shame, societal or religious rules we didn't ask for, and harm perpetuated by those who wish we would remain powerless. I have listed below books for couples, and my favorite resource for parents. When working with me, I will guide you towards the tools and resources your specific situation needs. You don't have to do this alone!

Do you accept our insurance?

I am in-network with Premera and Lifewise. You will need to determine the level of coverage your insurance will offer for therapy services.

I am an out-of-network provider for all other insurance plans.  However, I understand the financial considerations involved in seeking therapy. I offer competitive rates and can provide you with a superbill that you can submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement, depending on your plan's out-of-network benefits.
